Recommendations For Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier on 2016 Mazda CX-5

Question:

2016 Mazda CX-5 dealer installed hitch 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 class 1 receiver hitch. Says the towing capacity is 2000lbs. The cargo carrier says 2 inch... Can you recommend a solution?

Since your 1-1/4 inch dealer installed hitch has a towing capacity of 2000 lbs, it most likely has a tongue weight of 200 lbs. This is an important number, so you may want to confirm that with the dealer who installed your hitch.

To use the 23x47 Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - 450 lbs, # M2200, you would need to use an adapter like the Brophy Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver, # HTAD. Use of an adapter like this will reduce the tongue weight of your hitch by 50%, so once you remove the weight of the adapter and the cargo carrier, you would only have 39 lbs of cargo weight left to meet your limit. If that works for what you want to carry, you will be good to go.

My recommendation would be to upgrade your trailer hitch to the Draw-Tite Class III Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2", # 76138. Unfortunately this option is not available if you have a 2016 Mid-Year model, but if you have the regular 2016 model this would be a big upgrade. It will allow you to use accessories like the 2 inch cargo carrier without an adapter, and the tongue weight is much higher with a 525 lb rating and a 3500 lb gross trailer weight rating. I looked and your owner's manual and there are different towing limits and tongue load limits based on which sub-model, transmission, and whether it is 2WD or AWD, so you will want to double check your vehicle limits in your owners manual and go with whatever rating is smaller whether vehicle or lesser of all equipment for your capacities.
