Troubleshooting 7-Way Trailer Connector On 2015 Ram 3500

Question:

2015 ram 3500 and 2006 PJ 40ft trailer. There seems to be no power to the truck side of the 7 way for 12v pin and the trailer brake pin. I tested with good multimeter. Blinkers and brake lights work fine. But no power when brake applied to the pin and no power at all on 12v pin, or the center aux either.... any help would be great. All lights work, blinkers, stop lamps, etc... when the breakaway is pulled the actuator kicks on and builds pressure.. thank you for any help.

The first thing we need to know is if your 2015 Ram came with a 7-way connector at the rear. If so, most likely you have fuses missing for the brake and 12V power on the connector. You can check the fuse legend for your Ram and verify fuses are installed and in good shape.

If you did not have a 7-way and are installing a brake controller, then the 7-way like part # ETBC7 would need to be installed. This plugs into the 4-way connector at the rear of your truck and the remaining wires need to be attached as shown in the attached drawing. The remaining wires are brake(blue), 12V power(black), and the purple wire (center pin) can be used as auxiliary 12V power or for reverse lights. The white wire would need to be attached to a clean bare metal surface for ground.

You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to check for current when testing the wiring.
