Can a Sidewinder Pin Box be Locked Out so It Turns at the Hitch Rather than the Trailer

Question:

i have a sidewinder 16k kingpin and a pullrite 20k hitch, that was installed in my shortbed truck..i just purchased a long bed truck and had the hitch switched over to it...so i have 2 questions.. 1. does it hurt the sidewinder if i permanently lock it out, and have it pivot on the hitch from now on? 2. If i can permanently lock it out, can i use a teflon disc between the king pin and hitch now.. Thank you in advance...i just do not want to purchase another king pin or hitch if i do not have to.

The Sidewinder replacement pin boxes such as # RP61450 can be permanently locked out so that it pivots at the hitch. On the bottom of the Sidewinder at the back there is a place for 2 bolts that will go up from the arm to the turret.

Take a look at the instructions I have linked that show this hardware. There are two 3/4 inch bolts 4 washers, 2 lock washers, and 2 nuts required to lock out the turret. In the diagram in the instructions they are parts 8, 9, 10, and 14.

The bolts will need to be torqued to 275 foot pounds. The hardware should be grade 5 or better.

Also make sure that the wedge is removed so that the hitch isn't also locked out at the jaws. in some cases a lube plate can be used but it is really dependent on the hitch being used. Since the Sidewinders (while in Sidewinder mode and not locked out at the turret) are not tested or approved with some PullRite hitches, specifically the SuperGlide, I cannot say if it will work or if you will have to use grease.
