Will Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier Interfere With Back up Sensors On 2017 Subaru Forester

Question:

Looking for a good hitch mounted bike rack for my 2017 Subaru Forester XT. Considering Saris SuperClamp 2 and Kuat Sherpa 2.0. Im wondering if a platform rack would interfere with sensors in my bumper that beep if you are about to back into something. Bumper Sensors are 19 1/2inch to 20 1/2inch up from ground level. Also considered Thule Helium 2. Thule is expensive and Yakima is heavy. Don't know which rack would be best. Would like to pull in my garage with rack on.

When you use any hitch mounted accessory like a bike or cargo carrier in your trailer hitch, it will likely set the backup sensors off. If the rack does not set the sensors off, the bikes probably will. You may have a setting that allows you to mute the sensors when you are carrying bikes.

When choosing any accessory for your Forester you want to make sure you have enough clearance at the back of the vehicle. I have attached a helpful article that explains how you can measure to make sure you will clear the back of the rear bumper.

The bike carrier I recommend is the Saris SuperClamp EX2 Bike Platform Rack, part # SA4025F. I like this carrier because it has a shank rise of 5-inches which may avoid the sensors you have on your Forester. This bike carrier has a distance of 12 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest wheel tray.

Another nice bike carrier you mentioned is the Kuat Sherpa, part # SH22P. This carrier measures 9 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier when folded up. This carrier has a straight shank so chances are it will interfere with the sensors.

The Thule Helium is a great hanging bike rack but as I mentioned the bikes may interfere with the sensors as well. The problem is that it is only 4-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the locking knob on the shank.

If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
