Adjusting trailer brakes is pretty easy once you have the brake axle raised and safely blocked up. Start by removing the rubber plugs installed over the adjustment holes on the brake backing plates. Then, adjust the brakes until you cannot easily turn the brake drum by hand. Now, back off the adjuster until you feel a slight drag of the brake shoes on the drum, usually about 10 clicks. Once this is done proceed to the brake on the other side of the axle and perform the same task.
A brake adjustment tool, available at your local auto parts store, makes the task easier but a large screw driver will also do the trick. We have a video detailing how to adjust the brakes for you to review, at 4 minutes 38 seconds in the video brake adjustment is shown.
If you have brakes on more than one axle each assembly will need to be adjusted. Once finished your brakes will all function the same when the brakes are applied.
