Recommended ST235/85R16 Tire with Higher Load Rating for Horse Trailer
Question:
I have a 3 horse Bison trailer with living quarters. Carrying one horse and very little load otherwise, tires blow out. Bisons tag on trailer recommends tire size ST235/80R16 E. That tire requires 80 psi. My tire dealer recommends going up to ST235/85R16 which has a higher load range. Although not confirmed, I believe that the 85R tire requires higher pressure. Is there a problem with higher pressure on the existing rims? There is adequate clearance with the fenders for the higher tire.

The tire with the higher load range is going to require more PSI. Although, this usually isn't an issue, some rims have a PSI rating that is stamped on the inside of the wheel, but trailer wheels are designed to be used with multiple tire sizes and load ranges.
As long as you have the clearance, like you said, using the larger tires will be fine.
A good ST235/85R16 tire with a load rating of G is # TTWPRG235R16.
