How to Paint Galvanized Steel Replacement Trailer Fenders
Question:
Hello, I am looking to buy a couple 12 inch metal fenders, and I was wondering what the difference between the steel and the galvanized fenders and also how would I paint them to match my black trailer? Thanks

A galvanized steel fender like # CE17701G has a corrosion-resistant zinc coating applied to it, while a raw steel fender like # CE17720 does not. Both types can be painted, but it will be easier to paint the non-galvanized part.
In either case the parts should be thoroughly cleaned with a mild detergent to remove any residual oil or grease and a suitable primer should be applied before paint.
For a galvanized fender you will need to use a water-based primer. Do not use a petroleum-based primer because the oil can interact with the zinc on the parts left over from the galvanization process. You would then use a water-based paint to finish.
Most paint companies like Krylon and Behr, and certainly plenty of others, make primers and paint for galvanized steel and they should be available at your local home improvement store. I would not get a 2 in 1 primer/paint because with separate layers of primer and then paint you will have that much more protection. And be sure not to skip the cleaning/degreasing step.
You will also want to treat the mounting brackets in the same way to give them equal protection.
