My very favorite trunk mounted bike rack of all time is the OutWay, part # TH45JV for the 2 bike or # TH56BV for the 3 bike version. The OutWay is extremely easy to use. Instead of needing to fumble around with 6 straps and buckles like other trunk mount racks, the OutWay uses 2 rubber-coated straps that allow the bike rack to be installed or removed in seconds. The rack uses the OneKey system to secure the rack to the vehicle and the rack and the bike to the rack. The rack isn't inexpensive, but the fact that it's so easy to use makes it stand head and shoulders above everything else.
For something a bit more moderately priced, the Thule Gateway Pro # TH88VR for the 2 bike or # TH78VR for the 3 bike would be a good choice. The Gateway Pro attaches using 6 straps, and features a cable lock to secure the rearmost bike to the rack. A security strap like # TH533 is not included but can be shut in the trunk or hatch lid to secure the rack to the vehicle and is recommended. The upgraded cradles that hold the bikes work really well at protecting expensive bike frames against road shock.
Thule also offer an entry level choice, the Passage, # TH910XT for the 2 bike or # TH911XT for the 2 bike. The rack is basic with no locks, but it's a high quality bike rack.
Any of the racks mentioned above would be compatible with your Matrix.
If you'll be transporting women's bikes or bikes with sharply-angled top tubes, you might also consider a frame adapter bar like part # UB01. The bar spans the distance between the handlebar gooseneck and the seat post, which provides a secondary attachment point for the bike rack. This allows the bike to be carried level, which maximizes ground clearance. I'll link you to a video showing how the adapter bar works.
If you click the provided link, you can see product demonstration videos for the Raceway, the Archway and the Passage bike racks I mentioned.
