Weight Distribution for a 2014 Toyota 4Runner and 4,200 Pound Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2014 4runner with the oem hitch receiver. I am considering a travel trailer with a dry weight of 3700 lbs. Most likely when loaded would weigh about 4000 to 4200 lbs. The sae rating of my 4runner is 4700 lbs tow weight. My question is, most likely I would need a weight distribution setup. However, I am hearing that the 2014 cannot accomodate this as the hitch is bolted to the rear most frame crossmember and the rotational torque from the weight distribution system would put stress on the crossmember and not distribute the weight to the frame. I dont believe that to be true as the hitch receiver is rated at 500lbs tongue weight.

I checked the owner's manual online for the 2014 Toyota 4Runner. I found that the towing capacity of the vehicle is actually 5,000 pounds. No where in the manual does it say anything about the use of weight distribution. Check the factory hitch for a sticker that lists the capacity of the hitch. If there is a separate listing for weight distribution then you can use it. If there isn't you would need to speak with a technician at a Toyota dealer to determine if the factory hitch is rated for weight distribution.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Based on the gross trailer weight you have provided, max 4,200 pounds, the tongue weight of the trailer will be around 420 and 630 pounds. But if the hitch and/or vehicle is limited to 500 pounds then that is the max you have to go by. Pro Series system # PS49901 maxes out at 550 pounds tongue weight so it would be perfect for you. I have linked a video review of this system for you.
