Solution for Reese Elite Fifth Wheel Hitch Head that Doesnt Stay Open When Handle is Pulled

Question:

I have a Reese Elite RE18 5th wheel hitch. The last two or three times, when I pull the handle to release to pull out the handle wont stay out in the release spot. It will stay out for a bit then slam closed before I have a chance to move. Any ideas on what I need to look at? thx

I spoke with my contact at Reese recently about the heads of the Reese Elite fifth wheel hitches and he was telling me that if the Elite hitch heads like what comes on the # RP30144 are not lubricated they start behaving strangely like what you described.

I attached a picture that shows where either hitch needs to be lubricated with lithium grease like part # L11354. We recommend the pin get lubricated every time it touches other metal
