Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2015 Nissan Murano

Question:

Good morning. I have a 2015 Nissan Murano that I am going to have a receiver hitch installed correct term? and need a cargo carrier for road trips since rear interior space is limited and with a full sunroof I do not have an option of roof rails. Is this model 20x47 Reese Cargo Carrier model 63155 a good fit for my car? I assume I need the receiver to be 1 1/4inch when installed? I read that this model has a good ground clearance for the lower model cars and hopefully I picked the correct one. With only a few items on this when traveling I would not need to worry about installing brake lights but would need to relocate the car tag correct? I have never traveled with a cargo carrier so any and all information is helpful to make this a safe and pleasurable road trip for the family. Thank you.

Yes, you used the correct terms, receiver hitch is correct, trailer hitch is correct, just receiver or hitch is correct. Tow bar, however, is not correct unless you are in Europe. So you do have a good grasp on the lingo!

The Reese cargo carrier would have been a great choice, but this one fits in 1-1/4 inch receivers. This is fine if the hitch you are going to have installed is a Class I or II with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening.

But the aftermarket trailer hitches for your 2015 Nissan Murano, see link, are all Class III hitches with 2 inch receiver openings. If that is what you are having installed then the Reese carrier will not fit and you would want to use a carrier like the etrailer # e98874.

If you have not yet decided on a hitch I recommend # 75952. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch receiver and one of the more popular options for your Murano. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you.

I also recommend a cargo net like # EM01010 to secure your cargo.

I have included links to several videos of the products listed here for you to view. One final tip I can add is that remember that the carrier is back there, especially when backing up, parking or going into a garage (before closing the garage). Something as simple as a sticky note with Cargo Carrier written on it placed somewhere in the vehicle where you will always see it can be a helpful reminder.
