Installing Trunk Mount Bike Rack Top Straps on a 2016 Acura MDX

Question:

I dont see how the top straps can attach to the MDX. There are no gaps at the point where the top of the tailgate meets the roof of the car. There is rubber insulation all the way across where the top of the tailgate meets the roof. So how do I attach the top straps? Thanks.

The rubber you are describing sounds like weather stripping which is present on all vehicles with a rear hatch. Sometimes it is more visible than other times. It is compressible meaning that the hook end of a trunk mount bike rack strap can still fit in and grip the metal of the hatch. But it still possible that there isn't space and you will have to work the hooks in from the corners.

If you were to use the Thule Passage # TH910XT on your 2016 Acura MDX it would mean that the top straps would be putting pressure on the rear spoiler at the top of the hatch. This rack is not a fit for your vehicle. Because the vehicle has that spoiler there is only 1 trunk mount bike rack that I recommend; the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top rack # HRF2.

The Over-the-Top rack has an extra arm piece that moves the top straps up and over that spoiler so no weight is put on it. I have included a link to a video showing how it works.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
