Does the Right Rise or Drop Matter when Choosing a Weight Distribution System

Question:

I have an 04 ford explorer and a starcraft 18fb travel trailer 3600 lbs loaded. Loaded hitch weight between 400-500. Ive never used a weight distribution hitch. I currently use a 3.25 inch drop hitch or a standard 2 inch drop. The rv dealer wanted me to use a 4 inch drop. Does its matter this is only 1/2 inch max drop.

Selecting the right rise or drop for a weight distribution hitch is going to be the same as it is for a ball mount. You will need the proper amount of rise or drop that allows you to tow the trailer level. If the trailer is not level the weight distribution system will not work like it should because the tongue weight will either be too low or too high.

If the 1/2 inch drop in the Curt system # 17300 is not enough to tow the trailer level then there are alternate shanks you can get separately, see link, that offer more.

I have also included some helpful links on weight distribution, tongue weight, and measuring for the right rise or drop.
