Question:
do I need a supplemental braking system to flat tow my 2014 ford edge?

A supplemental brake system is one of the five items you need when flat towing any vehicle. The brake system I recommend is the Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. It's one of the easiest systems to use after the initial install. You just flip a switch to activate it.
If you do not have all of the equipment needed to flat-tow your Edge I will make some recommendations for you.
For base plates I recommend part # 4408-1 if your vehicle does not have EcoBoost and does not have Adaptive Cruise Control.
If you do not have EcoBoost and does have Adaptive Cruise Control, the base plates I recommend are part # 524426-1.
The tow bar I recommend is the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, part # RM-520.
If you have EcoBoost the base plates I recommend is part # BX2628. If you use these base plates the tow bar I recommend is part # BX7380. Safety cables are included with this tow bar.
If you go with the Roadmaster system the safety cables I recommend are part # RM-643.
The tow bar lighting I recommend is part # RM-15247.
Since you want to tow the vehicle as level as possible you may need a high-low adapter for your hitch. I have attached a link to our product page for the adapters we offer you can check out. I have also attached links to some helpful articles you may want to take a look at.
I also recommend buying a brake light relay, part # RM-88400. Do not open the package until you have completely installed the entire system and have the car attached and ready to tow. The Edge needs to be set up in tow mode which your owner's manual should describe. Test your system by turning on the turn signal in your towing vehicle. Then press the brake pedal in the Edge. If the turn signal stops blinking on the Edge you will need to install the # RM-88400. If the turn signal continues to work you do not need the relay.
