Troubleshooting Brake Controller Installation On 2014 Ram 1500

Question:

I have a activator 4 trailer brake controller installed on my 2014 Ram 1500. I purchased it with the prewired plug tail. When I connect up to my trailer the brake controller works. After a few stops the brakes no longer engages, the controller only displays a “.” The manual slide works, and if I use it, for a brief moment, the brake pedal activation will work and the controller displays the brake level number. I have checked fuses and even replaced the 40amp circuit breaker. i have checked for loose wires on the trailer brake line and see no issues. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the red wire from the brake controller is attached to the wrong side of the stoplight switch.

You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and check the stoplight switch at the top of your brake pedal. You should attach the red wire from the controller to the wire that only shows power when the brake pedal is pressed.

If the stop light switch wire is not the issue you need to check for dirt or corrosion on the trailer connectors and clean as needed. If you are still having issues with the brakes, you can check out the attached helpful article that shows how to test the brake magnets on the trailer.
