Weight Distribution and Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500

Question:

I have a 2011 chevy silverado 1500 ext cab 8 ft bed, we are buying a 26 ft travel trailer that weighs about 4,500 lbs. Will i need a weight distribution set up for this rv? And a electric brake controller? Not sure about all of this.

We recommend using a weight distribution system when the trailer weighs 50 percent or more of the vehicle weight or if the rear of the vehicle is sagging. I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution for you to view.

If you determine that weight distribution is needed you will need to go by the loaded tongue weight of the trailer. You can calculate the loaded tongue weight by combining the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Most likely your tongue weight would end up being 450 to 675 lbs and the part # PS49582 would be perfect.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.

This will install by attaching to the wires under the dash of your truck. I attached an install video that shows the process in a very similar 2012 Silverado.
