How to Choose a Weight Distribution System for an 8,000 Pound Trailer

Question:

Is there any reason to not purchase a unit made for more than ones current amount of payload? My car trailer and car are nearly 8k lbs, would it hurt to purchase a 12k hitch?

Actually, you would want a weight distribution that is rated a little higher than the gross trailer weight and tongue weight of the trailer. On many systems the capacities listed are the maximum for that system so if you went just by that then it would be easy to overload the system.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

A trailer weighing 8,000 pounds would have a tongue weight in the neighborhood of 800 to 1,200 pounds not counting any weight behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. To cover that entire range I recommend Reese system # RP66561 which is rated for 700 to 1,400 pounds tongue weight. For a 2-5/16 inch ball use # C40030.

This system includes a shank. The included shank has a max rise of 7 inches and max drop of 1-1/4 inches. Other shanks are available separately if more rise or drop is needed. I have linked the 2-inch shanks for you. I have also included some helpful links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
