If you will be towing a 5th wheel trailer then I recommend a 5th wheel hitch. If you went with a gooseneck you would have to use an adapter and that is problematic on a short bed truck. Adapters do not offer enough offset for most short bed trucks to tow most 5th wheel trailers.

I recommend going with a Demco HiJacker auto-sliding hitch. There are a few different models available. In a 18K capacity we have # DM8550034 that fits above the bed rails and # DM8550022 that fits under bed mounts. In a 21K capacity we have # DM8550035 for above the bed rails and # DM8550037 for under bed. All 4 of these hitches have 14 inches of travel and slide automatically.

If the trailer is less than 13,000 pounds gross trailer weight then you could use # DM8550040 for above the bed rails or # DM8550041 for under bed. These 2 hitches have 22-1/2 inches of travel so there won't be any clearance issues when making tight turns.

To recommend the above bed and under bed installation kits I would also need to know the year of your Ram 2500. I have linked a couple of video reviews on the HiJacker hitches for you.
