Are Two 1,750 Pound Torsion Axles Rated for a Combined 3,500 Pounds or Just 1,750 Pounds

Question:

I am building an trailer. I have 2 independent torsion axels that are rated at 1750# each. I am trying to determine the load weight of the trailer. If i have 2 of these axels on my trailer, can the trailer support 1750# or 3500#? Do you add the gross weight of each axel 1750 × 2 =3500 together or is the gross weight based upon the gross weight of the axel no matter how many you use 1750 ×2 = 1750

Expert Reply:

A torsion axle would have spindles to attach hubs at each end so it has the same capacity rules as a regular axle. If you have 2 torsion axles rated at 1,750 pounds each then the total is 3,500 pounds.

There are also some axle-less systems that are like torsion axles. So for example # ASR35HDS02 is rated for 3,500 pounds total or 1,750 per half.

Other factors affect the capacity including the tire and wheel capacity, hub capacity, and coupler capacity. Basically you go by the lowest rated component in the system.
