How to Allow an Atwood Coupler Reverse a Trailer Without Using Manual Lock Out

Question:

Hello, I currently have Atwood Actuator - 2inch Ball, 3inch Tongue, Bolt-On - 6000 lbs part 84132 and I tow a 23 foot boat. I have a 2001 F150 that I use to tow and I am getting ready to buy from your site the following parts: adding a Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller HM47294 and 47715 and 48470. I want to be able to reverse I want the Atwood to change from MANUAL reverse lockout to AUTOMATIC. What other part do I need to make the Atwood do this? Thanks in advance.

I have a solution for you, but Atwood does not have an electric reverse lock out solenoid available.

Instead you would want to swap the brake assemblies of your trailer to ones with free-backing plates. This style of brake assembly will allow you to back up without the brakes applying. I attached a page that has all of the free-backing plates we offer. You would need to measure the assemblies you currently have to pick out the correct ones. The diameter and width would be what you need.

That being said, if you are buying a brake controller and are converting the trailer to electric brakes you wouldn't need anything to allow the trailer to be able to reverse. I attached a link to a page that covers adding electric brakes to a trailer for you to check out as well.
