What is Weight Capacity of Dexter Axle that Measures 2-3/8 inches

Question:

Hello, I have a vintage single dexter axle with 4 leafs per side and 10 inch diameter electric brakes. The axle tube measures 2 and 3/8. tires are 4 lug 14. It is a drop type axle. I am trying to confirm the axle weight rating. Looks to me like is might be 3500lbs. Can you confirm this? Also I noticed the axle is bolted over the leaf springs and thought to myself wouldnt axle under springs hold more load? thanks p,s this is an old pop up trailer converted to utility. Trying to maximize load capacity to carry my compact tractor loader and backhoe. Trailer is about 13 feet of deck

Expert Reply:

A 2-3/8 inch diameter Dexter axle is going to have a 3,500 lb capacity.

Having the leaf springs over the axles (or vice versa) would not affect the weight capacity of the axle in any way either.
