Where Do Extra Diodes Go When Wiring A Tow And Towed Vehicle With Separate Brake And Turn Signals

Question:

to wire a tow and towed vehicle when they both have separate stop and turn lights. Jeff recommended to use #154 plus two diodes. Where would I use the other two diodes? The video does not mention this. Please confirm I do not need a tail light converter. Jeff, you mentioned that the battery should be disconnected to tow a 2010 jeep liberty. My books do not indicate this??? Thanks again.

The other two diodes are needed so you can have separate turn and brake signals. So you will have a diode for each brake light (right and left), a diode for each turn signal (right and left) and a diode for each tail light (right and left).

I will send you a link to the wiring diagram of the # RM-154 wiring kit to show where all of the diodes are connected and what color wires go to what function on the tow vehicle. A separate wire for the brake circuit will have to be run on the towed vehicle along with the # RM-154 wiring.

The taillight converter will not be used. It is only used when you have a towing vehicle with a 2 wire system and the vehicle being towed is a 3 wire system.

The battery reference is from the Roadmasters towing guide. It says the 2008 to 2010 Jeep Liberty is equipped with a feature that will drain the battery during towing, so you will want to disconnect the battery. You might want to check with your Jeep dealer on that feature, to make sure the battery has to be disconnected.
