Will a 12k Rated Weight Distribution System Work with Loaded Tongue weight of 620 lbs

Question:

Hello, I have a 2005 expedition, purchased a travel trailer, GVW weighs 5980LBS, tongue weight 620 LBS. I am using a Reese weight distribution hitch that is rated for 12,000 LBS. 1. Is this safe? 2. Should I use a Brake controller? I am new to larger travel trailers, I had a small one previously. Thank you.

The 12k rated Reese weight distribution systems like the part # RP66542 are intended for a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs so you would be at the very bottom of the range which could potentially give you a rougher ride quality, but it would still work. Plus, you need to consider the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your Expedition as tongue weight. This could put you more into the sweet spot for the system.

I would recommend a brake controller as your trailer is pretty heavy and a controller will allow you to stop your trailer much better. Especially in an emergency situation.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.

To install the controller would only require the install harness # 3035-P which will plug right into the controller and then to the port under your dash.
