How To Determine When a Weight Distribution Hitch is Needed Versus a Anti-Sway Bar

Question:

I have a 2012 F150 5.0 liter that I want to use to pull a 19 ft travel trailer with a tongue weight of 375 lbs. The vendor for the trailer is telling me I do not need a weight distribution hitch but I do need a friction sway controller. He has a standard receiver hitch w/ sway ball product and friction sway controller he wants to sell me. The F150 has factory installed trailer pkg and brake controller. Is the vendor correct? If not, can you advise me what weight distribution hitch/sway controller I should use? At most I believe, I would not exceed carrying more that 200 lbs behind the rear axle of the truck. Of course I am interested in an economical product and I am not wedded to any specific manufacturer.

Typically you would likely benefit from a weight distribution system if:

•Your trailer weight (GTW) is more than 50 percent of your vehicle's weight (GVWR)
•The rear of your tow vehicle sags when the trailer is hooked up
•You experience trailer sway
•Your tow vehicle's headlights point upward
•You find it difficult to steer or stop your rig
•You want to tow to the highest capacity allowed by your vehicle's trailer hitch

Sounds like your setup won't be to heavy, but if you could provide me with the GVWR and GTW I would be happy to help you determine if you will need a weight distribution hitch or just a anti-sway bar. Both should have placards with this information listed on them. Your vehicle's will be on the inside of the driver's door.

If you are experiencing sway then yes, the dealer is correct, you could benefit from an anti-sway bar but this will no allow you to back up without disengaging. I would recommend the economical Friction Sway Control Kit from Reese # 83660 for your setup. This unit will mount to your ball mount which is determined based on the height of your vehicle's hitch and the coupler. I have linked a Help Article that will show you how to measure for the proper ball mount as well as a link to the ball mounts we offer. The ball you will need will be dependent on the shank diameter of the ball mount and the size your coupler will accept.

To attach this anti-sway to your vehicle you will need a ball mount adapter. The correct adapter for a 2 inch ball mount is # RP26003.

I have linked the mentioned parts as well as a video of how an anti-sway bar will install to your trailer and vehicle for your convenience.
