Your first step in choosing a weight distribution system is to identify the tongue weight of your trailer when it's fully loaded and ready to tow. This tongue weight figure should also include the weight of anything stowed behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. These combined figures represent the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. The TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how find the TTW of your trailer.
Next, what kind of trailer is it? A low profile utility trailer or pop up camper might not need a system with a sway control component, but a higher profile trailer can be very susceptible to trailer sway caused by crosswinds or turbulence caused by passing or oncoming traffic. In that scenario, sway control is very important for safety and peace of mind.
The Curt # C17052 is designed for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 800-1000 lbs. If the 550 lb figure represents the fully loaded tongue weight of your trailer, the # C17052 wouldn't be a good choice as it would cause a very rough ride.
If you don't need sway control, and you find your total tongue weight is between 600-800 lbs, the # C17051 would work well for you. This system includes the weight distributing shank, but the # 40038 2 inch ball or # C40030 2-5/16 inch ball is sold separately.
If your trailer is a travel trailer, and you want an integrated sway control component for safety, the Fastway # FA94-00-0800 is absolutely ideal for trailers with total tongue weights between 400 and 800 lbs, which should be ideal for your trailer. The shank is included, but the # EQ91-00-6080 2 inch or the # EQ91-00-6100 2-5/16 inch trailer balls are sold separately.
