Cab Clearance for 90 Degree Turns with 5th Wheeler Hitched to 2014 Silverado 1500 5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

I have a 2014 Silverado Quad Cab with the short bed. 5 1/2foot. I plan to install bed rails for a reese 16k fixed mount hitch I have from using previously. The camper is a 2006 cougar. I need help solving the clearance problem with this setup. Will a 10inch kingpin extension solve my problems? Do I need to buy/install a slider hitch instead of the fixed position hitch I own from my last vehicle? Or should I replace the kingpin box with a sidewinder? Will any of the options allow for a 90 degree turn? pros and cons on each approach please.

The Sidewinder is the only recommended way to get the necessary clearance with a 5-1/2 foot truck bed. The 10 inch extension or the 10-12 inches of travel provided by a slider won't be sufficient for making any kind of turns, no pros or cons needed.

I'll link you to an FAQ article that explains how a Sidewinder works. The article also provides a clearance formula that'll help you determine how much clearance you'll have when all's said and done.

Here's a quick run-through of the clearance formula. To figure the approximate clearance you'll have, find the point on the truck bed floor that's directly over the rear axle centerline. Measure forward of that point by 1-1/2 inches. Then, measure from that point to the back of the truck cab. Add 22 inches to that measurement. This measurement needs to be 4 inches more than half the width of the fifth wheel at the front in order to make a 90 degree turn.

The Sidewinder model you'll need will depend on which OEM pin box is on your fifth wheel. The FAQ page has a listing at the bottom of the page showing many OEM pin box manufacturers and model numbers. The manufacturer and model number of your king pin should be listed on a sticker or plate affixed to the pin box. Once you know the manufacturer and model number, simply run down the list and match up which Sidewinder is compatible with your pin box. For instance, the # ST400-5AS16K is a replacement for a Leland 7910, 7920 or 7921 pin box. That particular Sidewinder has a 16K capacity.

To install the hitch, you'll need the Reese # RP50064-58 install bracket/rail kit. If you don't yet have a 7-way installed in the truck bed, you can install one using part # 41157.
