Expert Reply:

If you want to be really cost-conscious you can skip the roof rack entirely and simply use one of our foam block type kayak carriers on your truck's topper. These are designed for transporting kayaks on vehicles that do not have a roof rack of any type. All such carriers can be seen on the linked page; one bargain-priced example is the Righline Gear # RL100K10.

Advantages of foam carriers include price (as stated) but also very light weight (which saves your topper's weight capacity for the kayak itself), simple installation and the benefit of not having to permanently alter the topper. Foam carriers are also easy to transfer to other vehicles that have a bare roof (or roof rack). If one of these will do it for you there is no lower-cost option.

With rooftop cargo in the mix customers often choose a tire step like # HE4040 for easier roof access. This step comes fully-assembled, slips over a rear tire when you need it and it folds flat for storage.
