Parts Needed to Inexpensively Flat Tow a 2010 Ford F-150 Behind a Rental Truck

Question:

I have a 2010 Ford f150 supercrew 5 1/2 foot bed. I need brackets for the front of the truck and how do they mount and a tow bar for a one time pull of 1600 miles, behind a rental truck. Can you pls advise...Thanks.

To avoid having to drill into the truck bumper and modify it to use the economy brackets I recommend custom fit base plates # BX2606. To save some money you could use an economical tow bar, # BX7322 as long as the truck is under 5,000 pounds with cables # RM-643.

If the truck weighs over 5k but less than 6.5K I recommend the Alpha, # BX7380 which includes the safety cables. And if the truck weighs over 6.5K but less than 10K I recommend the Avail # BX7420 which also comes with cables.

For lighting, since it is a one time tow, all you would need is a magnetic kit such as # RM-2120.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the preferred systems for our installers and what I recommend is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO proportional system, # SM99251. It will apply the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
