Transmission and Engine Oil Thermostats for a 2013 Ford Explorer XLT Adding Tow Package

I would like to add towing to my 2013 Explorer XLT. It has the factory hitch already, but no engine oil cooler. I am thinking of installing a combo transmission/engine oil cooler to minimize towing impact on both. The Derale Transmission Coolers - D15902 looks to be a good option. My question though, is the tranny and engine oil always circulating through the cooler while the vehicle is running or is the a way to add a thermostat to both lines? I live in Wisconsin and the temperature gets to be below zero sometimes. i want to make sure i will not do damage to the engine or transmission by not allowing the fluids to get to the correct operating temperature before cooling.

The Derale # D15902 you were looking at is a great choice for your 2013 Ford Explorer XLT. This kit already includes an engine thermostat adapter, so all you will need is the transmission thermostat to complete your setup.

The Derale # D15719 is the transmission thermostat kit with fluid control you are looking for. Since you will have to cut the return line as well as the input line, you will need the extra hose # D15799 as well as the mounting kit # D25793 to install this transmission thermostat properly.

To answer your question yes, normally there is fluid running through the cooler while the vehicle is running, but after installing these two fluid controllers you are not allowing the fluid to reach the cooler until it is at the proper temperature. Installing these thermostats will allow your oil to heat up quicker but the common practice in cold weather climates is to let the vehicle run a little bit longer before taking off.
