Adapter to Plug Boat Trailer w/ 5-Pole Connector into Factory 7-way Connector on 2000 Ford F150

Question:

I have a 2000 f150 with factory tow package 7 pin round plug. , I just purchase a boat trailer with surge brakes which has a 5 flat wire plug. I read that the surge brakes needs a connection to a reverse wire I dont know if the factory allows this. Can you help with this?

If the hydraulic surge actuator on your boat trailer has an electric reverse lock out, you'll need a connection to the reverse light circuit on the truck. Look for a small solenoid located at the rear of the actuator with a wire tied into the trailer connector.

Since your F150 has the factory tow package, the center pin of the 7-way should be tied in with the reverse light circuit. You can test this by using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 on the 7-way. The center pin should power up when the transmission is shifted into reverse.

If the center pin doesn't power up with the transmission in reverse, you'll need to make that connection yourself. Use a circuit tester on the wiring harnesses feeding the taillight assemblies. The reverse light circuit will power up when the transmission is in reverse. Connect that circuit to the wire feeding the middle pin of the 7-way.

Once you determine the center pin is functional with the reverse light circuit, you'll need a 7-way to 5-pole adapter, part # A75TB which will allow you to plug your 5-pole trailer connector into the 7-way connector on your F150.

I've linked you to our trailer wiring FAQ which I hope you'll find helpful.
