Location of Brake Controller Port, Brake Controller and Wiring Harness for 1999 Ford F-150
Question:
I have a 1999 ford f150 xlt with no factory tow package just a 4 flat trailer connection in back of truck. There is a grey plastic fitting hanging down near the steering wheel. Is that a plug in for electric bakes? I hope so as I cant afford to pay a rv dealer big bucks. Thank you in advance .

The installation instructions for the custom brake controller adapter # 3035-P indicate that the brake controller port is under the dash, near the center of the console. The port will have a 6-pin connector that will mate with the one on the adapter at the end of the harness.
I have attached a photo of the harness end connector for you to compare to the fitting you have found in your truck.
If you do not already have a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller, Proportional # 90885. This brake controller will apply your trailer's brakes proportional to those on your tow vehicle, it offers 3 boost levels to adjust initial braking power, performs continuous diagnostics, and features an easy-to-read, user friendly digital LED display. I have attached an installation video of this brake controller in a 2000 F-150 for you.
If the 4-way connector is a factory connector, to upgrade to a 7-way blade-style trailer connector, I recommend the Tow Ready Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness # 118242. I have attached an installation video of this wiring harness on a 2001 F-150 for you.
