Installation of Curt Pop-In Ball on 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 UnderBed Gooseneck System

Question:

My previous gooseneck balls have been fixed one installed into the hitch. I wanted to double check that with these particular balls that the rotation of the ball is expected. My 60601 ball fits snugly into the adapter of my 14 Ram 3500. After the lever is placed in the lock position, the ball still rotates freely inside the hitch. I wanted verify this was the intended design. I assume it is, as the ball bearings fit the grove in the adapter. I purchased from e-trailer approx. 3 months ago. Just installing it now.

I can help set your mind at ease about the Curt Ball # C60601.

To help you understand why the ball is able to spin I want to tell you what's going on inside the hitch. The way the ball sits in and secures to the underbed system without a pin is by the use of the ball-bearings. To make this Pop-in and Go feature work Curt had to machine a groove into the gooseneck head. I have attached an image to give you a visual. I went out to the warehouse to test it myself, and found that the ball was able to spin even when in the locked position, but do not worry this will not cause a problem for you during towing.
