Recommended Weight Distribution System for 3,000 Pound Trailer with 400 Pound Tongue Weight

Question:

Hi there. I was hoping someone could help find me the right weight distribution sway control system. Im pulling a 3000lb trailer with a 400lb tongue weight. My vehicle is a subaru forester with 500lbs tongue weight limit if that matters. I would like to be able to use electric brakes and to be able to reverse. Can someone help? Thanks!

The weight distribution system I recommend for your trailer is the Reese Steadi-Flex, part # RP66558. This system is rated for trailer with gross towing weights up to 6,000 pounds that have tongue weights between 200-600 pounds. Your trailer's 400 pound tongue weight falls nicely in this range.

The Reese system uses automotive-quality friction material on the bracket hangers to work with the trunnion-style spring bars to create a friction sway control that works to stop trailer sway as soon as it begins. The trunnion spring bars help maintain ground clearance over the more traditional round bars.

This weight distribution system is designed to fit a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver that is rated for use with weight distribution. Class I and Class II 1-1/4 inch trailer hitches are not rated for use with weight distribution, and so there are no system designed to be used with a 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver.

I strongly recommend checking your owner's manual for the towing capacity of your 2015 Subaru Forester. When I checked the owner's manual, I found that the Forester is rated to tow a maximum total trailer weight of no more than 1,500 pounds. You will want to ensure that the trailer you will tow is within the capacity of your vehicle.

I have attached a help article on weight distribution systems for you.
