Parts Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to a 2,200 Pound Pop-up Camper
Question:
Hello, I am trying to figure out what I need to add brakes to my pop up. In particular am I uncertain about the hubs. My wheels have a 4 bolt pattern. The trailer already has the 7 pin connector and has the 4 hole plate on the axle to bolt the brakes on. I am also not sure what my axle capacity is. Since the max weight for the trailer is 2190lbs I am assuming it is 2200lbs but dont know for certain. What do I need?

Your trailer likely uses L44649 inner and outer bearings for the hub. You could pull off a hub and check the numbers on the sides of the bearings to be sure. They will have to come off anyway to install the brakes.
For L44649 inner and outer bearings and a 4 on 4 bolt pattern you can use # 8-173-16UC3 or, if you have EZ lube axles with the grease fitting at the ends then use # 8-173-16UC3-EZ.
Since you also already have the mounting flanges to mount the brakes you will not need to add flanges. For brakes I recommend # 23-47 for the left side and # 23-48 for the right side. When wiring the brake magnets either of the wires can be used as the ground and the other wire will go to the back of the 7-Way and attach in the 5 o'clock position.
The only other part you will need is a brake controller in the vehicle. For that I would need to know the year, make, and model, and if the vehicle has a 7-Way, 4-Way, or no trailer connector. I have included some links that should also help.
