Parts Needed to Tow a Fifth Wheel Trailer with a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500

Question:

Hi, I have a 91 Sierra Cobra 28ft that I want to tow with a 2012 Dodge Ram with 5.5ft box. We dont do a lot of camping so dont want to spend a fortune so what would you recommend for hitch arrangement. Do I need autoslide or will manual suffice? Is the sidewinder kingpin arrangement the way to go? I want something that will allow me to turn fairly tight without issue and without having to unhook the trailer to reset the hitch. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

The Sidewinder pin box will be the only route for your truck since you have a 5-1/2 foot bed on your 2012 Ram 1500. Slider hitches can only be used on 6 feet and longer truck beds since they don't give enough clearance to allow the trailer to turn.

You will need to remove the pin box of the trailer and replace it with a Sidewinder pin box. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct one.

There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer.

Once you figure out which pin box you have you can check the FAQ I attached that has a chart that shows the correct Sidewinder to get based on which pin box you have.

With a Sidewinder the Reese Select Plus part # RP30081 that you referenced would be a great choice. This is one of the nicest hitches around because of it's 360 degree wraparound jaw system that will provide excellent contact.

For a rail kit you will need the part # RP30035-386 which has been confirmed as a fit for you truck as well.
