Transferring Prodigy Brake Controller to 2009 Ford F-150 Will it Work with Anti-Lock Braking System

Question:

I took my prodigy out of my Jeep cherokee and want to install it in my 2009 Ford F-150. I have the harness that came with my truck and the harness for my Prodigy. The instructions from the harness that came with the truck is pretty clear. Problem is I was told by a Ford dealership that I would have to pay them $80.00 to program the trucks computer to work with the brake controller. I plug the ford harness into its connector, the prodigy into its connector, splice the 4 wires together, plug in the fuse and one other item and Im good to go. Will I create a problem with the trucks ABS or blow the computer if they dont program the trucks computer?

You can easily install the Prodigy brake controller on your 2009 Ford F-150 with the factory harness that was provided with your truck. Just be sure that when you splice the wires from the Prodigy to the wires on the Ford adapter you connect the correct wires together. The wires exiting the back of the Prodigy are as follows.

White - Ground
Black - 12 Volt Power into the Prodigy
Red - Stoplight Circuit
Blue - Trailer Brake Feed Circuit

If you would like a wiring adapter that will not require splicing you can use the Brake Control Wiring Adapter for Ford F-150 - 2 Plugs, item # 22292, to connect your Prodigy to the factory connector on your 2009 Ford F-150.

The only reason the Ford Truck would need to be reprogrammed, or have the computer flashed, is if the truck is equipped with the factory brake controller. If this is the case, a fault code will appear when the factory controller is unhooked. This code will appear because the computer will be looking for communication with the factory controller which will no longer be attached to the connector. Once the computer is flashed the computer will no longer search for the factory controller and the fault code will not reappear.

Aftermarket brake controllers, like the Prodigy, only receive a signal from the vehicles brake light circuit. This signal does not power the trailer brakes but tells the brake controller that the brake pedal has been depressed. An accelerometer then determines the amount of power that needs to be sent out on the trailer brake feed circuit and then uses power from the vehicle battery to apply the trailer brakes. This system will not effect the vehicle ABS system. Properly attaching the Ford connector to the brake controller wiring will eliminate the possibility of any affect on the vehicles braking system.
