Trailer Brakes Lock Up When Brakes Are Applied WithThe Hopkins Agility Brake Controller, # HM47295

Question:

I had a Agility Brake Controller installed a couple of months ago for use when towing my RV and my new Utility Trailer. I have an issue when towing my utility trailer empty. The brakes lock up everytime I press the brake pedal. Sensitivity settings are as low as I can make them. What advice do you have to resolve.

It sounds like you might want to check the adjustment of your trailer brakes. It sounds like the brake shoes are adjusted too far out. When you are applying the brakes with the sensitivity setting at its lowest setting, it is still sending a little current to the brakes and if the brake shoes are too far out they might be locking up.

The best way to adjust the brakes on your trailer is to back off the brake shoes until there is no drag on the drums at all and then tighten them up until you get a slight, even drag on the drum.

I am sending a video link that will show adjusting trailer brakes. It starts at the 4:40 time of the video.
