Recommended Tire Chains for 2013 Lincoln MKT
Question:
I have a Lincoln MKT with AWD and 255-45-20 tires and aluminum rims. I like the TH04115255 chains but they are a bit too expensive to purchase two pairs. Is it recommended to only use one pair of chains with AWD and these tires and, if it is, should the chains be installed on the front or rear? The manufacturer manual indicates that chains should not be used on this tire size but chains are required when I have to drive to the mountain area when snowing.

In an AWD vehicle, you may use one or two sets of chains. Since the owner's manual doesn't specify which axle the chains should be on if you're going with one set only, I'd recommend putting them on the front wheels because you'll want your steering axle to have the best traction possible. For some vehicles, turning off the traction control when using chains might be necessary, see the owner's manual for details.
Since your owner's manual specifically mentions that chains should not be used on your 255/45-20 tires, I'd check with your Lincoln dealer to see if you can get some clarification. I can't suggest you do anything contrary to what Lincoln says in the manual unless you get approval from your dealer.
If Lincoln gives you the green light on using the chains, the Thule # TH04115255 Easy Fit chains are an excellent choice. The links are only 10 mm wide, well under the 15 mm that's the maximum threshold for Class S chains. Another option would be the Thule K-Summit, part # TH02230K66. With K-Summit tire chains, no portion of the chain extends to the inside of the tire, for maximum clearance.
