Troubleshooting New Boat Trailer that Jerks When Towing Only with One Tow Vehicle

Question:

I recently just went in on a boat purchase with my dad and brother. Its a 23foot center console and weight with everything is about 4400 lbs. the trailer is dual axle with surge breaks. I am pulling boat with a 2005 expedition. Its not 4x4. The tow capacity is 6000 lbs. I use my dads truck which is a 2002 Ford F-150 and it pulls smooth. My car has same engine as my dad so I know it can pull it but when I pull it its a constant jerking back and forth. The trailer and boat are brand new. Boat is loaded correct. Only difference is my car and my dads truck. We do use different hitches though. I am using a 2inch ball which is what is required. What is the problem.

First thing you need to check is to make sure that you are towing the trailer as level as possible with both vehicles. If your trailer isn't towed level the surge brakes may not be able to activate properly. Surge brakes need the trailer to be level otherwise the forward inertia will bind up the coupler slightly since the inertia will want to push the trailer forward and the nose of the trailer will want to move at an angle instead.

I attached a help article on how to pick out the correct rise/drop ball mount when towing.
