What I recommend is to use Curt weight distribution shank # C17122. On it, it measures 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of that support gusset. I have linked a video review of this shank for you.

On Curt weight distribution shank # 17120 the measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the support gusset is 3-1/4 inches. You would not want to drill a new hole, especially further back because there would not be enough of the shank in the hitch receiver for it to be safe for use. It would also void the warranty.
