Comparing the Yakima HoldUp and Saris Freedom 4 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Carriers

Looking at HoldUp and the Saris Freedom 4. Both seem to have the features Im looking for. Any advice on choosing between the two?

If I was choosing between the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443-2 and the Saris Freedom # SA4414B I would go with the Freedom. The primary reason is the folding operation. The Saris Freedom has a lever at the back which is very easy to access. The HoldUp has it up near the shank which makes it harder to access, especially with bikes loaded.

Also the Saris Freedom is lighter which means it is easier to handle and store than the HoldUp. The Freedom weighs 53 pounds and the HoldUp weighs 100 pounds.

The HoldUp does have a higher capacity at 60 pounds per bike compared to 35 pounds per bike for the Freedom. So if you have bikes heavier than 35 pounds, go with the HoldUp. The HoldUp also has better clearance between it and the vehicle when the carrier is folded. On the HoldUp it is 7 inches from the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the carrier when folded. On the Freedom that measurement is 6 inches.
