Is Support Strap Required For Bike Rack Used in 1-1/4 Inch Hitch on 2015 Toyota Prius C

Question:

I am looking at buying the Thule T2 Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier with Integrated Cable Lock - 1-1/4inch Hitches. My question i believe i read that with the 1 1/4inch version i need to run some type of support strap, is this true? I have a 2015 Prius C and only looking to use a single road bike weighing 20lbs. If i need some type of support strap what would i buy and how would i mount it. Thanks

If the trailer hitch on your Prius C was manufactured by Curt, their warranty policy requires that a strap like the # 18050 be used for all non trailer loads like bike racks or cargo carriers.Draw-Tite hitches have so such stipulation. The support strap would use a hook to attach to the vehicle at the seam between the top of the rear hatch and the roof. If you click the provided link, you can see how the strap is installed.

Long story short, whether or not you need to use a strap depends on which hitch you are using. Be sure that the weight of the bikes and the weight of the rack does not exceed the tongue weight capacity of the hitch, which should be printed on a sticker affixed to the hitch.
