Weight Distribution for a 2002 Lincoln Naviagtor and 5,900 Pound Toy Hauler Trailer

Question:

I am showing my Navigator can tow up to 9000 lbs. I am buying a toy hauler that weighs in at 5000lbs dry and total weight of 8000lbs loaded. The tongue weight of the trailer is listed at 750lbs. I will be towing a 900lb motorcycle that I will be trying to center right on the axles of the toy hauler. and I will probably most likely have ~200lbs behind my rear axle of my TV. Which WD setup should I be looking at? Thanks

The first thing you will want to check is the hitch on your 2002 Lincoln Navigator to make sure it is compatible with weight distribution (which I am sure it is) and more specifically the tongue weight capacity when used with weight distribution.

Trailer tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight but can be higher on toy haulers. If the trailer's dry weight is 5,000 pounds and the 900 pound bike is the only thing loaded in it that would be 5,900 pounds. At 10 to 15 percent then the tongue weight would be in the neighborhood of 885 pounds. Add in the 200 pounds behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle for a tongue weight of 1,085 pounds.

Based on this weight I recommend a system that is rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds, # RP66084, which comes with dual-cam sway control. Dual-cam sway control prevents sway from starting so it is a highly effective system.

If you just want weight distribution without sway control then you could use # 49570. For either system you will need to add a ball, # 19286, for a 2-5/16 inch diameter. One key tip: try to be consistent with how you load the bike and cargo to keep the tongue weight consistent and at that 10 to 15 percent. I have included some helpful links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
