Recommended Enclosed Trailer Ladder Rack for 6 x 12 Flat-Top Trailer
Question:
Hello, I am very interested in this ladder rack but my concern is that the ladder rack will sit too high on my flat top 6x12 trailer. I saw on the video on your site that they say that they cut the height down about 5inch and I am wondering how that is done and if it is a really a big to do it. I know some manufactures sell their racks for a flat top and for a round top you just order accordingly so the rack will not sit too high. Please let me know what I should do for my flat top trailer as I need a ladder rack and need to make a decision on which one to buy. Thanks for your help.

It is not difficult to cut down the height of the vertical struts on the Rack'em Fitz-All Enclosed Trailer Ladder Rack # RA-28. This rack features aluminum construction that makes it both lightweight and easier to cut to size than a steel rack. This system is great for flat-top enclosed trailers as long as they have a rain gutter installed at the roof line. In the install video our techs did trim off about 5-inches of height from the bottom of the strut's top half (they are a 2-piece assembly). More can be cut off but according to my contact at Rack 'Em this might then require some filing of the welds inside the tubing.
Another option is the Pack'Em Ladder Rack Bracket Kit # PK-28B. This kit also requires rain gutters for installation and accepts pressure-treated 2 x 4 lumber (not included) as the crossbars for the rack. This system has a 200-lb total weight capacity, half that of the # RA-28.
The uprights on this rack can also be trimmed down in height, by as much as 9-inches. You would need to drill two new holes in each tube to secure it to its base; holes are already drilled in the bottom of the uprights but you would be cutting that part of the upright off to reduce its height so new holes would be required to replace those you cut off. Please refer to the brief video I prepared for you.
