Weight Capacity Of RV Hitch-Mounted Bike Carriers

Question:

Looking for an RV approved bike rack which can hold 40 lb. bikes. Swagman says their racks have a 35 pound per bike limit. Does that mean that the total weight of bikes on a 4 bike rack cant exceed 140 pounds or is it really that any one bike cant be over 35 pounds?

The cradles and straps used on the hanging bike racks like part # S64400 are rated for 35 lbs each and using a bike weighing more than 35 lbs in the carrier or exceeding the weight limit of the entire rack would void the warranty.

If you have a bike that weighs just a bit over 35 lbs I recommend using the Swagman Dispatch, part # S44FR. This is a platform-style bike carrier and it has a capacity of 2 bikes that weigh up to 45 lbs.

If you are planning on carrying a bike like an E-bike, you may be able to remove the battery to make sure the bike does not exceed the capacity for the carrier.
