Question:
What must I use if I want to go from 1 1/4 to 2 inch but also want to tow a small trailer?

To go from a 1-1/4 receiver to a 2 inch opening, you will need an adapter like the # HTAD (for Class I or II trailer hitches). I have included a video review of this adapter below.
However, the use of an adapter will reduce your trailer hitch tongue weight capacity by 50 percent. Make sure you know the tongue weight capacity of your hitch, divide by 2, and do not go over the result.
If your hitch is rated for 250 pounds tongue weight, with the adapter it will be reduced down to 125 pounds. The tongue weight on your small trailer cannot exceed 125 pounds.
The best and safest option would be to install a 2 inch trailer hitch. I will be happy to make a recommendation if you give me the year, make, and model of your vehicle.
