Tekonsha Two Stage Breakaway Battery Charger Shows No Output Voltage
Question:
I hooked Tekonsha charger up to primary truck battery and checked the output with a electronic VOM . Nothing . Is there a reason for no open circuit voltage output from a trickle charger? Understand that breakaway battery is not connected for this voltage measurement. I was just trying to verify the charger is working. Most chargers I know will still output even if there is no load. Or is the charger broken? thanks

I went out to the warehouse and pulled a Tekonsha Two Stage 12 V DC Battery Charger # 2024-07. I also was having a hard time getting the meter to read amperage or voltage output but I eventually was able to have the probes positioned in such a way that it did read amperage.
Apparently either the meters or the chargers are sensitive to slight changes in position and that affects the reading. This is also a 2 stage charger which can skew the results since it would not be sensing a battery but instead a meter and it would think that the battery is either charged or not present thus not produce any output power.
