Troubleshooting Factory Brake Controller On GMC Sierra 2500HD

Question:

I have a Sierra 2500HD and a 2012 Heartland Edge M192 with electric drum brakes. The Sierras ITBC DIC doesnt recognize the camper. All lights, blinkers, flasher work fine, but the trailer brakes lockup when in reverse. From what Ive read, it sounds like I may need a brake magnet for the ITBC to correctly. Is this correct or is there some other component I need to get the ITBC to correctly see the camper? Thanks!

You may have a short in the system that is causing the issue with your brake controller. That can be caused by a corroded or dirty trailer connector on the trailer, or the truck. A short can also be caused by a broken or frayed wire or the brake magnet wiring being damaged somehow.

I recommend checking out all the connectors and wiring for any signs of damage and fix as needed. If that checks out you can test the brake magnets to see if that is what is causing the problem. I have attached a link to a helpful article that shows how to test brake magnets you can check out.
