What Is The Recommendation For Welding Erickson E-Track System

Question:

We install E track in steel bodies. Can E track be welded in and if so what would you recommend for weld size and spacing?

The typical installation of the Erickson Horizontal E-Track, part # E19148 is by installing bolts or screws through the mounting holes on the track system.

It can be welded, but specific precautions should be used when doing so as this is a zinc-coated steel and welding produces dangerous fumes. It should always be done in a ventilated area.

In my research I found that the zinc coating has a lower melting point at 1,600 degrees F versus steel at 2,800 degrees F, and if not removed before welding can cause porosity and voids in the weld which can crack later. The best way to weld this is to remove the zinc coating before welding the tracks.

For stability many times we recommend installing hardware in every other mounting hole which would be every 4 inches. For welding, you would need to determine how many welds you need to use for the most secure installation.
