Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes that Lock Up When Brakes Are Touched

Question:

we have recently purchased a new truck new to us, 1999 ford f 550 one ton dump and it has started to lock up our trailer brakes with the slightest application of the truck brake. We did some trouble shooting by hooking the trailer up to another truck and it seems to be working fine. I have replaced the brake controller and it is doing the same thing. Anything else I should check

Sounds like your trailer wiring connector on your Ford F550 has the brake output and stop light circuit shorted together and when you apply the brakes the full 12 volts that is supposed to go to your trailer lights is going to your brake assemblies and locking them up.

What you will want to do is clean the pins of the connector on your truck and then check the wiring of the connector looking for any cut or exposed wire and fix as necessary.
